The Black House Broadstairs

A totally flat site – a former croquet lawn, was unheard of !   The brief for this house was a long awaited realisation of a forever home that was not only future-proofed for this family, but could also deliver for any subsequent occupants, the flexibility to work from home, or embrace extended family and enable private and personal space as well as the ability to host the perfect party to include grown-ups and children.   The orientation of the site lent itself to morning sunrises and afternoon sunsets, so the design was concentrated on embracing every moment of the day both outside and inside, with courtyard gardens, a sunken firepit, outside shower, treehouse and great bar-b-que and dining space.

A peaceful residential neighbourhood that was averse to long periods of building works added to the challenge, so our team were set a task to build with the minimum noise and disruption in the shortest timeframe.   19 weeks from the first dig for foundations to moving in date – a truly remarkable testament to fantastic group of trades that worked tirelessly around each other in order to achieve the impossible!

The end result is an extraordinary home that divides opinion on the outside due to its straight lines, and dark materials, but the overwhelming opinion of anyone who enters the front door is of astonishment and delight.  The ability to surprise and enchant is the definition of a unique home.
